He was predeceased by: his parents, Archie Richard Gainey and Ethel Verner Miller Gainey; his daughter Pamela Dinkins; his brothers, William Talmadge Gainey, Johnnie D. Gainey and Henry "Cotton" Rudolph Gainey (Margot); his stepfather Jesse Crawford Dees; and his daughter-in-law Judy Taylor.

He is survived by: his wife Patsy Diane Gainey; his children, Paula Gainey, Sheila Reppenhagen (Lewis), Thomas Taylor (Rose) and Lawrence "Larry" Taylor; and his son-in-law Floyd. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
