He was predeceased by: his former spouse Lee Dean Lyons Cox; his parents, Edward Bailey Cox and Bessie Mae Hardee Cox; his daughter Pamela Cox Mills; and his siblings, Ruis Powers, Eldridge Cox, Reverend Bernard Cox, Jackie Powers, Robert "Bubba" Powers, Margaret Cameron, Miriam Thomas and Cleonis Benton.
He is survived by: his spouse Reverend Ellerbe Powers; his stepchildren, Nancy Carter (Ricky) and Larry Benton (Gina); his grandchildren, Jeremy David Carter (Stacy), Deana Carter Groves (Matthew), Jonathan Michael Carter (Joanie) and Reginald Benton; his great grandchildren, Wyatt Carter, Gracelee Carter, Collin Groves, Harper Groves and Maddox Carter; and his siblings, Reverend Dan Powers (Bunny) and Faye Powers Greco. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
