He was predeceased by: his wife Hazel Lena Smith Ayers; his parents, Almon Ayers and Rachael Holbrooks Ayers; his children, Tommy Ayers, Sr., Carol Ayers and Deborah Ayers; his siblings, Rev. J. D. Shedd, Helen McCracken, Jean Thomas and Francis Evans; his granddaughter Connie McCracken; and his great grandchild Daniel Ayers.
He is survived by: his daughter Linda McCracken of Walhalla; his siblings, Billy, Junior Shedd, Vivian Ayers Norris and Ann Sloan; and his grandchildren, Tommy Ayers, Jr., April Barry and Amanda Ayers. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and eight great great-grandchildren.
