He is survived by: his wife Joan Tappmeyer Leadbetter Hughes; his siblings, Helen Hughes of Linville, Christine Billings of Rural Hall, Shirley Gelston of Denver, CO and Paul Hughes (Fay) of Linville, NC; his grandsons, James Avery Hughes of Plum Tree and Henry Grant Hughes of Chapel Hill; his stepdaughter Kimberly Waldo (Wes) of Lancaster, SC; and his stepgrandchildren, Logan Waldo of Columbia, SC., Abigal Denkins (McKenzie) of Travelers Rest, SC., Lindsey Waldo of Lancaster, SC. and Megan Waldo of Lancaster, SC..
