He was predeceased by: his parents, James Dan and Mildred Hopkins Smith. He is survived by: his wife Shirley Reese Smith; his children, Bo Smith (Tina) and Kristina Smith-Palmer (Len); his grandchildren, Carolina Smith, Tre Smith, Brandon Spears and Corey Spears; his great grandchildren, Jaxon Spears and Austin Spears; and his siblings, Stanley Smith (Alane), Evelyn Gaines and Joyce Willoughby (John). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Marys House, P.O. Box 132 Pickens, SC 29671.
