She was predeceased by: her parents, William Henning and Betty Jean Ferguson. She is survived by: her children, Kelly Bates Meyer and Jeffrey T. E. Bates; her husband Maynard; and her sister Judy Deneke. She is also survived by her children, two grand-children.
She donated her brain to the Medical University of South Carolina Brain Bank in the hope that their research can help to solve the origins of her dementia, which also afflicted her mother, who died of it in 2012.
