He was predeceased by: his parents, Grady Lee Smith and Maybelle Emmaline Collins Smith; his former wife Joyce Drawdy Smith; his daughter Glenda Diana Smith; and his siblings, Thomas Smith and Lillian Etolia "Toy" Eubanks.

He is survived by: his spouse Gerry Annette Brandon Smith; his children, James "Jimmy" Smith, Jr. (Joyce) and Brenda Barbrey (David); his stepdaughters, Paula H. McMillon and Patricia Bellue (Scott); his brother George Smith Sr. (Thi Chi); his sister-in-law Celeste; his grandchildren, JJ Smith, Cecil Leebo Smith (Blythe), Brandy Nina Cheyenne Zavala (Guill) and Elizabeth Nicole Layton; his stepgrandson Phillip Edward Webb; and his great grandchildren, John Mark Smith and Hannah Faith Cooper.
