He is survived by: his wife Edith Rast Gates; his children, Juanita Tyson (Ronnie) of St. Matthews, James David Gates (Christie) of St. Matthews and Melinda Herndon of St. Matthews; his brother Jerry Gates (Gloria) of St. Matthews; his nieces and nephews, Tony, Parrish and Marlin; and his pets, Tinker and Hollie. He is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
