He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Luther Hiers and Hazel Victoria Priester Hiers; his daughter Brenda Hiers Bailey; his brother William Hiers; and the mother of his children Doris Moore Hiers.
He is survived by: his wife Miriam Padgett Hiers; his children, Gene Hiers of Columbia, Victoria Hiers of Walterboro and Judy H. Williams (Ken) of Sweetwater, TN.; his stepchildren, Amy DeLong (Ricky) and Marion Sauls (Teresa); his sister Rhoda Hiers Gooch; and his stepgrandmother Dolly Stone. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the he requested that memorials be made in his honor to either The Guideons International or to the Connie Maxwell Children's Home.
