He was predeceased by: his parents, John Dexter Harter and Eunice Bryant Gulledge; his stepparent Howard Leon Gulledge; his stepson Bobby Hudson; and his siblings, Victor, Charlie, Richard, Carol, Evelyn, Audrey and Judy.

He is survived by: his significant other Barbara McLendon Hudson; his children, Sharon Ryan (Harry) and David Hudson (Jessica); his grandchildren, Katrina Ryan, Spencer Hudson and Jessica Lovell; his great grandchild Olivia Grace Ryan; and his brothers, Buddie Harter, Gerald Harter and Harold Harter. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
