He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard Jacob Smith of Lancaster County, PA. and Naomi Elizabeth Smith of Lancaster County, PA.; his brother Major Robert D. Mumma; and his granddaughter Savannah. He is survived by: his wife Patricia J. Smith of Indian Land, SC; his sister Maryann Leckron of New Windsor, MD; and his children, Gene, Phil, Jason, Ben, Deanna and Melissa. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two nieces and two nephews, and two great-nieces and two great-nephews.
