He was predeceased by: his parents, John H. Akers and Mabel P. Akers; his wife Betty Akers; his children, Gary L. Akers, Jr. (Annette) and Deborah Bennett; and his sister Brenda Shepherd.
He is survived by: his son Barry Akers (Phillip Strickland); his siblings, G. Tracey Akers (Connie) and Jeanie Keen (Oadie); and his grandchildren, Jason Bennett and Amanda Buchanan. He is also survived by three great grandchildren.
