He was predeceased by: his father James Allen "Hunchy" Salter, Sr. of Wagener; his sister Ann Young; his nephews, Jake Schumpert and Dustin Jones; his siblings-in-law, Keith Jones and Beth Hughes; and his friend Herb Fulmer.
He is survived by: his mother Barbara Q. Salter,; his son Jay Salter; and his sister Amy Schumpert (Randy). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorials may be made to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, the Mid-Carolina High School Band Booster Club, or Saint Luke's Lutheran Church.
