He is survived by: his wife Councilwoman Janie Cooper-Smith; his daughters, Cecilia Smith and Antoinette James; his stepchildren, Denine Hammonds (John), Shauna Cooper and Corey Cooper (Matilda); his siblings, Ruby Ann Hayward, Lena Bell Avinger, Ruby Nell Hampton, Faith Smith, Ervin Smith, Nathan Smith (Wanda), Douglas Smith and Bildon Smith; his brothers-in-law, Reverend Doctor Kim C. Anderson (Quida) and Richard Drayton (Marilyn); his granddaughters, Ladasia and Jada James; his stepgrandchildren, Jada Aghukwa (Bambie), Jared and Bryce Cooper; his adoptive children, Henry "Troy" and Theresa Shingler; and his caregiver Regina Hillard. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends.
