He was predeceased by: his wife Gerda Sieglinde Ernst Matzen; his parents, Francis Xavier Matzen and Helen Elizabeth Brenner Matzen; and his daughter Candace Elizabeth Matzen. He is survived by: his children, Mellisa Black (Doug) and Joseph Walter Matzen, Jr. (Erin); his siblings, Thomas Matzen (June) and Carol Horney; his grandchildren, Douglas Black, Jr. (Megan), Eric William Black (Chloe), Matthew Charles Matzen and Rebecca Sieglinde Matzen; and his close friend Daisy.
