He is survived by: his niece Rennie; his son Derek Zimmerman (Gwendolyn) of Fishkill; his granddaughter Jasmine Hall of Brooklyn; his siblings, Dorothy Zimmerman Elmore of Orangeburg, Liz Zimmerman Keitt of Orangeburg, Evia Zimmerman Thomas of Orangeburg, Joe L. Zimmerman (Carol) of Ashbury Park and Leroy Zimmerman (Alice) of Cumming, Georgia; his nieces and nephews, Reinell Thomas-Myers (Jerome) of Charlotte, Teresa Elmore Wilks of Orangeburg, James Elmore Jr. (Gloria) of Orangeburg, Marvin Keitt of Orangeburg, Vincent Keitt of Brooklyn, Lamont Zimmerman of Brooklyn and Rodney Zimmerman of Atlanta, Geogia; and his brother-in-law Gilbert Taylor of Columbia.
Viewing was held on Wednesday, April 9th 2025 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory of Orangeburg (28 Hawthorne Trail, Orangeburg, SC 29115). A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 10th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel (2868 Columbia Rd NE, Orangeburg, SC 29118). A burial was held on Friday, April 11th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery (4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC 29229).
Upon retirement from the Foundation, Sonny and Dorothy relocated to Manning, South Carolina in 1996.
