He was predeceased by: his parents, Merriett Chavis and Evelou Oliver Chavis; his sons, Steven Chavis and Jimmy Chavis; and his grandson Allen Sims.
He is survived by: his children, Bernie Wilson Chavis (Debra Redhead) of Canton, NC, Richard Allen Sims (Linda) of Florida and Mary Lou Chavis Browder (Glen) of Lake City. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; and a number of great grandchildren.
