He was predeceased by: his father LeRoy "Jack" Carter; his former wife Nelda Carter; his brothers, Don Carter, Rene Burdette, Wayne "Pappy" Burdette, Thomas "Fuzzy" Baxley and Keith Carter; and his stepsister Harriett Jacobs.

He is survived by: his wife Alma Wilson Carter; his children, Tommy Carter (Stephanie) of Hemingway, Jackie Tyler (Cecil) of Hemingway and Allen Carter (Yessy) of Hemingway; his stepchildren, Butch Wilson (Kathy) of Pinewood, Susan Robertson (David) of Kenton, OH, Cheryl Plowden (David) of Manning, James Wilson (Connie) of Sumter and David Wilson (Michelle) of Lynchburg; his grandchildren, Jennifer Eaddy (Justin) and Christopher "Cody" Tyler (Cristen); and his brothers, Charlie Carter (Ann) of Hemmingway and Jimmy Carter (Becky) of Charleston. He is also survived by four great grandchildren; fifteen step grandchildren; 30 step great grandchildren; one step great-great grandchild.
