He was predeceased by: his parents, James L. Townsend, Sr. and Allie Amick Townsend; his stepmother Lucille B. Townsend; his sister Bobbie T. Walker; and his sons-in-law, Gary Mathis and Lee Roberts.
He is survived by: his children, Beverly J. Cooper and James R. "Russ" Townsend (Cheryl); his grandchildren, Dr. Christopher A. Cooper, Anthony D. Cooper (Rachel), A. Morgan Townsend-Smith and G. Palmer Townsend; his great grandchildren, James T. Cooper and Christopher H. Cooper; his stepchildren, Tony Walters (Donna), Debbie Roberts, Steve Walters and Kris Eason (Shawn); and his brother James L. Townsend, Jr.. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
