He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Savage Heyward and Mary Heyward McCoy; his son Thomas Savage Heyward, III; his stepson LaRue Barbee; and his sister Mary Agnes Johns.

He is survived by: his wife Shirley Heyward; his daughter Terri Heyward; his stepchildren, Rickie Barbee and Cindy Straney; his grandsons, Thomas Savage Heyward, IV and Travis Paul Heyward; and his siblings, Charles Heyward and Deborah Smith.
