He was predeceased by: his parents, Nelson F. Helm Jr. and Velma L. Gillespie; and his brother Nelson "Rick" F. Helm III. He is survived by: his wife Dawn Helm of Myrtle Beach, SC; and his stepson Charles Fones (Courtney) of Alexandria, VA.
