He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hess and Olivetta Hess; his granddaughter Ashley Griffiths; his nephew William Hess III; and his brothers, William Hess II and Mark Hess.

He is survived by: his wife Carole; his children, John Hess Jr. (Patricia) of Newtown, CT, Christopher Hess of New Haven, CT and Margaret (Edward Schmitt); his stepsons, Jeffery Griffiths of Arlington, WA and Robert Griffiths (Karen); and his grandchildren, Garrison (Stephanie Schmitt), Eric Schmitt, Jeffery Hess, Julie Hess, Jacob Griffiths and Jessica Griffiths.
