He was predeceased by: his parent Raymond Virnelson; and his sons, Thomas Robert and John Patton Virnelson. He is survived by: his parent Mable Kilpatrick Virnelson; his wife Judy Patton Virnelson of Surfside Beach, SC; his son Raymond R. Virnelson (Sarah) of Spruce Pine, NC; his sister Kay Thompson of Mint Hill, NC; and his grandchildren, Jake Virnelson, Zeb Virnelson of Spruce Pine, NC, Nicole Anderson (Will) of Hickory, NC and Robert Virnelson (Melanie) of Charlotte, NC..

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church 180 St. Paul Place Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
