He was predeceased by: his parents, Osie Lee Murphy and Sarah Pennell Murphy; his grandchildren, Mycaila Smith, David Murphy and Kaitlyn Murphy; and his sisters, Gayle Stack, Willaree McDuffie and Vivian Murphy.

He is survived by: his wife Edith McDonald Murphy; and his children, Matthew Stephen Murphy (Tiffany) and Katonya Michelle "Shelly" Murphy (Shawn).
