He is survived by: his wife Patricia Clerc Benton; his sons, Joseph David Benton Jr. of Louisville, KY and Justin Hale Benton I of Moncks Corner, SC.; his grandchildren, Justin Hale Benton II, Alexis Grace Benton, Caroline Anne Benton, Campbell Amelia Benton and Ella Mae Benton; his nephews, Stephen Kenneth Varnadoe (Cindy) and Gary Vaughn Mangum (Emily); and his niece Caroline Almedia Couture (Alex).
