He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter E. Bates and Wanda W. Bates; and his wife Martha F. Bates. He is survived by: his son Chris Bates (Amy) of Denville; his sisters-in-law, Betty (Zoro Guice) of Hendersonville, N. C. and Linda Funderburk of Thomasville; and his close friends, Gail, Blake and Meredith. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
