He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert J. Johnson and Mava Marie Green Johnson; and his brothers, Jerry Johnson, Ed Johnson and Van Johnson.

He is survived by: his wife Carole Jean Johnson; his sons, James L. Johnson, Jr. and Brandon Gene Johnson of Lynchburg; his grandson Lucas E. Johnson; his siblings, Dora Jean Beasley of Bishopville, Larry Johnson (Elizabeth) of Lynchburg and Terry Johnson (Beverly) of Mayesville; and his sisters-in-law, Lisa, Annette Johnson and Becky Johnson of Lynchburg.
