He was predeceased by: his parents, Sam Richard and Lila LeGrand Kirkland; his siblings, James E. Kirkland, Danny J. Kirkland (Linda), Sam W. Kirkland, Duncan Kirkland, Nettie Mae Cameron and Sallie Bell O'Quinn; and his brother-in-law Nelson Rhodes.
He is survived by: his wife Peggy Richardson Kirkland; his children, Windy Kirkland Smith (Miles) and Henry "Richard" Kirkland, Jr. (Regina); his grandchildren, Tyler Anne Kirkland, Megan Bettis (Chase), Peggy and Julie Smith; his sisters, Minnie Motley, Edna Martin, Sue Branham and Daisy Rhodes; his sisters-in-law, Myra Kirkland and Connie Youngblood (Joe); and his caregivers, Christine Lopes, Amanda Brown, Jamie Crapps, Linda Shealey, Eva Samples, Meredith Myers and Dianne Sargent. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
