He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Anthony Akshar and Elizabeth Joan Akshar; his son Anthony John Akshar; and his brother Joseph Anthony "Joe" Akshar. He is survived by: his children, Joseph Anthony "Joe" Akshar (Jenni), Jason Elias Akshar, Gregory Elias Akshar, Jr. (Breanna), Christina Marie Akshar and Dorothy Akshar Kessler (Robert); and his siblings, Frederick Akshar (Dorene), Elizabeth Hagens (Ed) and Jeanne Woodhouse (Jim). He is also survived by ten grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
