He was predeceased by: his parents, Grace Cook and Grover Cook; and his sister Thelma Wright (Dewey). He is survived by: his wife Mildred Compton Cook; his sister Doris Terry (Buck); his siblings-in-law, Helen Pendergrass and Julius Compton; his children, Sue Watson (Tony), Marian Dickerson (Luke), Cheryl Stanley (Dale), Kim Boyd (Mark), Tommy Cook (Debbie) and David Cook (Carmen); his grandchildren, Jimmy Watson, Jennifer Rzeszut (Matt), Matt Cook, Kristin Farrell (Nick), Melissa Bowen, Travis Hambrick, Tara Shiver, Grayson Cook and Emma Cook; and his pet Mikey. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In September 2021, he received a quilt of valor from the Quilts of Valor Foundation to thank him for his service and sacrifice in serving our nation.
