Renauld Kenneth Cherven Obituary
Renauld Kenneth Cherven of North Myrtle Beach passed away on Monday, November 2, 2020 in Conway, SC. He was 88, born June 10, 1932 in Medford, MA to Michael and Marie (Hankovska) Cherven, and has been a resident of North Myrtle Beach since 1992.
In 1956, Mr. Cherven married his loving wife of 64 years, Anna Marie (Terris) Cherven, who survives him. Together, they raised three children: Kenneth (Karen) Cherven, Diane (Kenny) Klebanow, and Philip Cherven. Sadly, Philip predeceased his father in 1991. Mr. Cherven is also survived by grandsons Kellen and Kristopher Cherven, granddaughter Kathryn Cherven and step-granddaughter Samantha Klebanow and her children Ashton Rubio and Elliana Grazette. In addition to his parents and his son, Mr. Cherven was predeceased by his brother Clifford Cherven and sister Adele McWatters.
Mr. Cherven graduated from Medford (MA) High School in 1950 and then was drafted by the US Army in 1952, serving two years. After attending seven years of night school, he graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1962, earning his degree in Engineering and Management. After a long career with Burroughs Corporation (later Unisys), and moves from Massachusetts to New York to Michigan, he retired in 1991.
In his early retirement, Mr. Cherven was an avid golfer and worked as a starter at Possum Trot golf course. A longtime member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church, he volunteered in several roles to support the church, and his love of reading led to his volunteer work and leadership as president of the Friends of the Library at the North Myrtle Beach branch. As bereaved parents, he and Anna spent ten years as leaders of the Waccamaw chapter of the Compassionate Friends, helping other parents cope with the losses of their children. He and Anna were recognized as 2006 Sun News “Volunteer of the Year” finalists for their cumulative service to the community. The $500 award bestowed by the Sun News in for their recognition became seed money for a children’s memorial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway in conjunction with Compassionate Friends, where annual candle lightings were held each December in honor of their lost children. Together with Anna, he hosted weekly worship and hymnal services at Summit Place and Myrtle Beach Manor on behalf of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. in 2015, they were recognized as Volunteers of the Year by Summit Place.
Interment will be in the Memory Garden at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friends of the North Myrtle Beach Public Library or Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church.
