He was predeceased by: his parents, John Edward McGrath, Sr. and Avice Hinton McGrath. He is survived by: his wife Deborah Whitacre McGrath; his children, Rachel Bedenbaugh (Jeff), John Edward McGrath, III (Bonnie), Joanna McGrath McLelland (Chris) and Deborah McGrath Johnston (Tommy); and his siblings, Joseph McGrath, David McGrath and Linda Sue Jones. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.
