He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph David and Onivia Graydon Childress; and his brothers, David and Kenneth Childress. He is survived by: his daughter Laurie West (Eddie) of Laurens; his grandchildren, Andrew West (Courtney) of Laurens, Emily Dasher (Aaron) of Laurens and Thomas West (Amanda) of Central; his great grandchildren, Allison West of Laurens, Mattison Dasher of Laurens, Natalie West of Laurens, Landon Dasher of Laurens, Weston Dasher of Laurens and Lauren West of Laurens; his siblings, Louise Kelly of Woodruff, Wilton Childress (Shelia) and Curtis Childress (Carolyn) of Laurens; and his sisters-in-law, Ann Childress and Anna Faye Childress of Laurens. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
