He was predeceased by: his parents, James Thomas Whitaker and Nannie Ghent Small; his stepfather Sidney Outen; and his siblings, Jimmy Whitaker, Curtis Outen, Jerry Outen, Lulu Brooks, Becky Welsh, Dela Carnes and Eva Hinson.

He is survived by: his children, Jerry "Speedy" Whitaker (Tammy Washburn) of Lancaster, Bertina Whitaker and Valisa Whitaker; his siblings, Len Outen (Sandy) of Iron Station, NC and Dianne Hudson of Denver, NC; and his grandchildren, Sierra Boulware and Brandon Whitaker.
