He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Clinton Herndon and Maybell Crider Herndon; his wife Doris Davis Herndon; and his son John "Chuck" Herndon. He is survived by: his son David Allen Herndon (Jamie) of Swansea, SC; his daughter-in-law Terri Herndon of Rock Hill, SC; his sister Myra McElvaney of Georgia; and his grandsons, Bryce Herndon, Henry Herndon, Christopher Herndon and Justin Herndon. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren as well as a host of relatives and friends.
