He was predeceased by: his wife Cheryl Smith Horton; and his parents, Edward Conyers Horton and Verdessa Thor Horton. He is survived by: his children, Michael "Lee" Horton, Jr. (Allison) of Lynchburg, SC and Michelle Horton Gall (Nathan) of Auburndale, FL; his grandchildren, Michael Lee Horton, III, Gamble Thomas Horton, Edward Conyers Horton, Kate Marie McFaddin Horton, Jack Nolen Gall, Wyatt Nathan Gall and Julia Debra Nadine Gall; and his daughter Christina Sara Horton.
