He was predeceased by: his parents, Gertrude Wilhelmina Mathews (Sangren) and Fayette George Mathews; his wife Betty Jean Mathews (Collins); his son Wayne "Buddy" Steven Mathews; and his sisters, Dorothy Benner and Lois Browning.
He is survived by: his children, Walter Robert "Bob" Mathews Jr. (Jill) of Campobello, Brenda Lyd Athanas (Michael) of Silver Spring and Belinda Fay "Bee" Banaszak (Rob) of Warsaw, Missouri; his grandchildren, Ryan David Mathews (Stephanie), Rebecca Lyn Mathews, Robert Richard Mathews (Eirene), Keri Anne Trulsen (Chris), Michael Mathew Athanas (Myra), Rodney Lee Newkirk (Sarah), Robby Lee Newkirk (Angel) and Kimberlee Rae Mathews; his great grandchildren, Tyler Mathews, Nolan Mathews, Dylan Mathews, Audrey Mathews, Nathalie Athanas, Gabriella Athanas, Logan Athanas, Thaddeus Trulsen, Krista Newkirk, Noah Newkirk, Zachary Salter, Kaleb Labar, Lillee Mathews and John Lefevre; and his great great grandchild Avery Newkirk.
