He was predeceased by: his parents, D. I. Smith and Hallie Loyd Smith; his son Michael A. Smith; and his sister Barbara Rutledge. He is survived by: his spouse Jean Johnson Smith; his sons, Larry D. Smith, Jr. (Becky) of Gastonia and Scott Smith (Dale) of Inman; and his grandchildren, Larry Dean Smith, III, Mark Smith (Jasmine), Cody Scott Smith (Brooke) and Carly Grace Smith. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
