He was predeceased by: his parents, James Milling Cathcart and Bessie Lee Cathcart of Anderson, SC.; and his grandson Peter Vold. He is survived by: his wife Joan; his son James Henderson Cathcart (Linda) of Gastonia, NC.; his grandchildren, Chelsea, John and Andrew; his great grandchild Kari; and his siblings, Ellenor Cathcart, Leita McCaughrin, Ruth Kinard, Sara and David.
