He was predeceased by: his parents, Ellen Stone McCarter and James McCarter; and his sister Betty Self. He is survived by: his wife Katherine Louise Hill McCarter; his daughters, Rene McCarter and Leslie McCarter; his stepdaughters, Sheron Haines and Donna Turner; his adoptive son Jonathan Fowler; and his sisters, Shirley Griffin and Martha Blanton. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren.
