He was predeceased by: his parents, Truman Hammonds and Ruby Pearl Cole Hammonds; his stepchildren, Jimmy Chadwick, Billy Chadwick, Truman Chadwick, Beatrice Ashley and Nellie Ruth Gunnells; and his siblings, Roy Hammonds, Larry Hammonds, Audrey Ross, Elizabeth Calvert, Elee Hammonds, Betty Joyce Hammonds and Eloise Hammonds.
He is survived by: his son James Wilbur Hammonds; his stepsons, Samuel Chadwick, Jr. of Level Land, Dewey Chadwick of Columbia and Randall Chadwick of Donalds; and his siblings, Jerry Hammonds of Anderson, Lou Emma Hammonds of Anderson and Mildred Young of Grovetown, GA. He is also survived by great-grandchildren.
