He was predeceased by: his parents, Posey Phillips and Nannie Harbin Phillips; and his sister Brenda Joan "Cissy" Bishop. He is survived by: his wife Mary Phillips; his children, Michael Phillips Jr. (Casey Lynn), Matthew Brian Phillips (Monica) and Monica Lynn Feil (Brian); his grandchildren, Christopher Feil (Nadia), Robert Feil, Ethan Phillips, Carter Phillips and Lucy Phillips; his great grandchild Lincoln Feil; and his brothers, Jerry Phillips and Tony Phillips.
