He was predeceased by: his parents, Raleigh McClellan Bennett and Julia White Bennett; his wife Wanda Hudson Bennett; his daughter Cathy Bennett Batts; and his brother John Terry Bennett.

He is survived by: his children, Elizabeth "Beth" Bennett Crawford (Donnie) and Robert McClellan Bennett, Jr. (Bob); his stepchildren, Hope Martin Montague, Alison Collins Hudgins (Stuart), Robert Clinton Collins, III (Trey) and William Blake Collins; his grandchildren, Mitchell, Morgan, Brynleigh and Brystol; and his great grandchildren, Lizzie, Lane, Sutton and Oaklynn.
