He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruth Anderson and Otis Clebourne Johnston, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Patricia'Pat'Gilbert Johnston; his daughter Christine'Hollis'Lumpkin (John Parker); his granddaughters, Johnston'Taylor'Lumpkin of Georgetown and Ruth'Ruthie'Rutledge Lumpkin of Georgetown; and his sisters, Elizabeth Kincaid'Beth'Johnston of Columbia, Ruth Mackfie'Mackey'Johnston of Columbia and Christine Johnston'Christy'Nexsen (Julian Jacobs Nexsen, Jr) of Greenwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the wildlife education program at Camp Leupold - 8444 Old River Road, Pinewood, SC 29125.
