It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Bates Sr. of Gaffney, South Carolina, who passed away on September 24, 2024, at the age of 85, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his spouse Shirley Arrowood Bates; his parents, John Bates and Lucille Terry Stewart; his stepfather Tommy Stewart; his son Kevin Dean Bates; and his brothers, Lawton Bates and Bobby Joe Bates.

He is survived by: his children, John Bates, Jr. (Kathy) of Canada, Rodney Bates (Jo Anne) of Gaffney and Kim Bates (Brian) of Baltimore, MD..

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Shriner Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
