He was predeceased by: his parents, Mark Francis Paterno and Leona Bradley Paterno; his son Mark Patrick Paterno; and his sisters, Joanne Paterno and Marlene Bryne.
He is survived by: his daughters, Marlene Osborne (Fred) of Fort Mill, Melanie Bryant (Robbie) of Indian Land and Laura Roberts of Fort Mill; his grandchildren, Kara Carter, Matthew Paterno, Milissa Myers, Kristina Hoffman and John Devine; and his great grandchildren, Kaylee, Gabriel, Elijah, Grace, Hayliegh, Hannah and Hayden. He is also survived by six nephews and a niece.
