He is survived by: his wife Linda Lewis Merritt; his children, Thomas Rutledge Merritt (Jessica), Shelby Nelson (Marion Stephens) and Heywood Nelson; and his grandchildren, Gabriel Alexander, Alice Shelby Merritt, Addison and Drayton Nelson.
