He was predeceased by: his wife Ethel Richards McPherson; his parents, Boise Williams and Daisy McPherson; his children, Joseph I. McPherson, Jr., Lula M. McPherson and Deborah A. Crawford; his siblings, Willie McPherson Sr., Edith Gadsden, Henrietta Gadsden and James McPherson, Sr.; his half-sister Catherine Mackey; his daughter-in-law Vermer McPherson; and his sisters, Edna McPherson and Hazel McPherson (Thomas Gadsden).
He is survived by: his children, Daisy B. McPherson, Dorothy M. Ladson (James, Sr.), Lawrence McPherson, Catherine McPherson and Mark A. McPherson, Sr.; his grandchildren, Danielle Gerald (Kenneth), LaTrisha McPherson, Marc McPherson (Hassana), Jeneen McPherson, Kimberly McKinnon, Shawnise Oliver (Edward, Jr.), Brian McPherson (Carlita), Kariston McPherson, James Ladson, Jr., James McPherson, Tamika Hartwell, Zam Ladson, Travis McPherson, Shavon McPherson, Lauren Crawford, Monique McPherson, Robert Crawford, Jr., Maurice McPherson (Juwanda), Marcus McPherson (Alexis), Azure'McPherson, Desmond McPherson, Mark A. McPherson, Jr. (Nakita), Ashley McPherson and Jurnee McPherson; and his son-in-law Robert Crawford, Sr.. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
Viewing was held on Friday, March 14th 2025 from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM at the Smith-McNeal Funeral Chapel (2119 Dorchester Rd, North Charleston, SC 29405). A wake was held on Friday, March 14th 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM and from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. A celebration of life was held on Saturday, March 15th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Calvary AME Church (8321 Pine Landing Rd, Edisto Island, SC 29438).
