He was predeceased by: his parents, Voight Quinby Gandy and Mae Rhodes Gandy; his brothers, Voight, Arthur, Robert and Charlie "Bubba" Gandy; and his stepdaughter Tammie Moody McNamara.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce Davis Gandy; his children, Lex Gandy (Brook), Jeni Johnson (Jimmy) and Emily Colvin (Bobby); his grandchildren, Haley McNamara, Jordan Gandy, Jamison Gandy, Alex Shoemake (Taylor), Miranda Shoemake (Brandon) and Ashley Colvin; his stepson Ricky Moody; and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Cantrell (Del) of Columbia and Virgie Stanton.
