He was predeceased by: his parent John Grier Hudson, Sr.; his former wife Nancy Watts Bloom; his children, Dale Hudson Howard, Joan Richardson Hudson and John Grier Hudson III; his sister Maude Ogburn Hudson Henderson (Daniel Sullivan Henderson); and his niece Nancy Hastings Henderson.

He is survived by: his wife Marcia Heffner Hudson; his son-in-law William Bostwick Howard III; his grandchildren, Dale Garrison Howard, Barrett Howard Justice (Jonathan Kyle Justice) and Grier Howard Marr (Robert Thomas Marr); his great grandchildren, William Lewis Justice, Hudson Anderson Justice and Charlotte Elise Marr; his sister-in-law Virginia Heffner Boone; his nieces and nephews, Michael Miller Love, Robert Reynolds Heffner Love, Catherine Henderson Pardue, Carson Henderson Anderson, Elizabeth Henderson McCullough and Caroline Henderson Worthy; and his friends, Barbara J. Barksdale and Jose J. Barksdale.
